I will be frank, I always liked the idea behind Fiverr.com.
Just a couple clicks and a customer can put an order using a freelancer according to a specific set of deliverables.
Easy peasy, right? Sure, however, it comes at a price. A major one.
That is only the couple freelance platforms in which buyers have been given free reign to abuse, sabotage and outright blackmail sellers any way that they like.
Why? Because Fiverr turn a blind eye on it.
In this informative article, I wish to talk about a recent bad experience for a vendor on Fiverr, and why I chose to give up on the stage entirely.
How A Normal Order Quickly Turned Into A Hostage Situation
(I've been guiding her building up a respectable account, and how to go above and beyond every last purchase. Everything stated is that her doing, I am only an audience )
In cases like this, she'd only gotten another $5 sequence on her logo gig, which appeared to be just like another... so we thought.
The order was fulfilled in good time, and my girlfriend had included a bonus emblem concept as well as the source file (that is usually part of the more expensive package).
The client"loved" one of the concepts so we proceeded to deliver her the appropriates record sizes, as stated in the gig description. Shortly afterwards, things got a little bizarre.
The client came back requesting a social networking kit to decide on the logo, something that is clearly not offered as a member of her gig.
In my advice, my buddy decided to provide the additional work, although not getting paid any extra for it.
Following that, the customer responded with much more demands and a few adjustments to the social networking files.
At this time, she agreed enough was enough.
Despite every effort to please this individual, they have been clearly overstepping their boundaries here.
That is when the customer went from only overstepping bounds to unquestionable blackmail. (The equivalent of taking my girlfriend Fiverr standing hostage.)
While she took some time to ponder a reply and reach to Fiverr service for assistance, the customer did finally go on and render a 1 star review.
Presumably this was to show her he/she wasn't Fiverr Inc. "working at fiverr" Reviews Glassdoor.com.au kidding.
Shortly after, while still waiting on Fiverr's answer to the support query, the client paid an extra $10 to your social networking kit.
Of course, the payment has been accompanied by yet another danger.
At this point, all I wanted to do was move all Liam Neeson and search this individual down so I could punch them in the face.
However, at the time, I had hope that Fiverr support could step in and save my girlfriend out of that PITA client.
When the answer came from Fiverr support, they told that they could Fiverr Review And Guide: Make Extra Money $5 At A Time not force the purchaser to take the order.
Okay, that's reasonable enough. (though the purchaser accepted it, technically.)
In addition they proposed drawing up a list for the buyer to demonstrate the job was completed in accordance to the gig prerequisites.
Frankly, this reply simply didn't cut the mustard.
My girlfriend communicated in her first email that the customer was trying to extort her for free work outside the agreed terms, by making a negative review if she didn't comply.
Obviously, it was not about the work, it had been about seeking protection in an abusive client who had been intentionally pushing his luck.
Their answer did not give us any confidence that Fiverr actually understood , and even at this point we felt like they didn't wish to get involved.
At exactly the exact same time, she responded to the buyers newest danger, explaining that she would not continue to function with them unless the feedback had been changed/removed.
(Again, this is comments that was clearly and intentionally made to bully her to providing work out of the agreed provisions .)
A fair request by anyones standards, correct?
As opposed to acknowledge what the purchaser had completed until this time, Fiverr instantly turned the tables in my girlfriend.
Turns out, she had been the only breaking all the rules.
Since she had requested the client to change their opinions, she was no more eligible for any assistance from Fiverr support.
You can imagine how we felt studying this.
What the purchaser had done and said prior to her very last message was now being swept under the rug -- as if never happened at all.
Fiverr essentially decided to support a manipulative bully, leaving my girlfriend with a permanent stain in an account she'd worked so tough to build up.
And think, there are tons of buyers doing exactly that on Fiverr, knowing they can and will get away with it.
But as all of this was happening, I did a little research to find out whether some other sellers went through a similar ordeal with a buyer.
Very quickly, I discovered a variety of almost identical cases on the Fiverr forum outdated years ago. (that's correct, decades.)
This is clearly something which's been going on for a long time and it all stems from giving buyers too much power over sellers.
If there's 1 thing I've learned about Fiverr, directory it is that clients are ALWAYS more valued than freelancers.
Regardless of how much time you put into a job, or just how hard you've worked on it, or maybe how well you handled communication during a dispute, when it really boils down to it... freelancers have little to no security.
Even if it's a clear cut case in your favor, there is still every chance the client will come out on top. All it takes it one little thing that you"did wrong" according to their own terms of service and EVERYTHING else is ignored
Looking at the signs, it is clear to me that Fiverr is well aware of what is happening, yet remains eager to settle back and let it happen.
If you are a decision maker in Fiverr and you're reading this, then I urge you to seriously reconsider your present support procedures for freelancers.
It is not right that someone can set all the time and effort into establishing an account and also over-delivering at every conceivable opportunity, only to be shot down from the very people that you rely on to safeguard you.
Look, I do not wish to abandon Fiverr. I don't wish to be telling folks to avoid your system.
But after everything that has occurred, you have not left me any choice.
Until something is done to guard freelancers from using this kind of abuse, I'll continue to propagate this post and do whatever I could to stop others from falling prey to your one-sided support staff.
The second you really do something about it and give freelancers a way to fight , I will be happy to update the post.
